From Death Sentence to Acquittal – and Life Imprisonment for Two Others**
The Court of Appeal issued a ruling yesterday in the case of three defendants accused of importing and trafficking drugs. The court amended the sentence of the first defendant (M.A.) and the second defendant (A.M.) from the death penalty to life imprisonment. It also overturned the previous judgment issued against the third defendant (J.Z.), which sentenced him to death, and acquitted him of the charge of drug trafficking.
The Public Prosecution charged the three defendants with drug trafficking (heroin and opium), resisting authorities, and customs smuggling.
Attorney Khalid Al-Shatti, the lawyer of the third defendant (J.N.), who succeeded in overturning the death penalty and securing his client’s acquittal, stated that this ruling “deserves to be written in gold and displayed at the entrance of the Palace of Justice, as it affirms the Islamic teachings and the legal principles established by judicial precedents.”
